Trawling Gumtree: Just Chalk it

So right now I am obsessed with Chalk paint. Remember the whole “put a bird on it” stage? Well the new one is “just chalk it”. Like, literally paint everything you can in your house with this matte, milky-smooth, heaven sent paint. Let’s be honest with our selves, would we use anything other than Annie Sloan? (If you haven’t heard of her product: google please.) Such beautiful colours, great wax finishes. Easy to use to get amazing results. Seriously though, Just chalk it.

Let the Gumtree finds begin!

6 Mixed Matched Wooden Chairs

So its $180 for 6 mix matched wooden chairs. WHAT A STEAL! I mean, they have done all the hard work for you…. get shopping!

There are two options you can go forward with… either paint them in a soft pastel colour palette to keep the whole mix matched theme continuing OR paint them all the same colour, which still looks cool and uniform at the same time as they are all different shapes. It really depends how much colour you already have going on in your room. If it’s already cray, I’d pick all the same colour option. But, if your room is neutral, the colour palette option is SO STUNNING.

mint chairs

Four Pine Bar Stools

$30 for 4, or $10 each. Bargain!

Paint these babies up with a lovely soft hue, like this pale grey blue. Keep the paint solid for a modern look or sand back a little for a rustic/country vibe.

Timber Side Table

Ok people, this wins cheapest buy for this post. Only $5. Yep. You can’t even get a small cheeseburger meal from Mc Donalds for that. But you can get a side table.

So it’s a bit beaten up… but its $5. There’s only one thing to do… PAINT PAINT PAINT PAINT! Paint it black and sand back only the edges. It will make it look super cute for a super cute table.

Buffet Hutch

Going for $100…. again, Gumtree you deliver the bargains!

This should be painted two toned. You simply must! If you’re feeling crafty take the doors off to make sexy open shelving.

6 Bentwood Chairs (3 Broken)

$300… this is a love project. Save it for a rainy day, or get someone else to fix them up. Worth it.

So 7/8 painted bentwoods chairs make my heart sing. Like, in that loud voice you use in the shower when you’re on a roll. Can someone please do this and send me pics? It will make me weep (with tears of joy).

Single Wood Bedhead

Negotiable… so really cheap right?

This beadhead would look super cute painted in pastel pink for a girls room…. just chalk it!

So pretty much anything wooden you can get your hands on, chalk it. You won’t won’t regret it, trust me.

How to Care for Your Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

fiddle-leaf-fern-in-manhattan

Fiddle leaf fig trees (Ficus Lyrata) are so hot right now. Like, if you want a plant inside, this is the one to go for… especially if you want something more leafy than a succulent. I have had two, but only one lives on. R.I.P my favourite leafy one. Through the tragic loss of my first fiddle leaf I have now learnt how to care for this sometimes finicky friend.

When choosing a spot for you fiddle leaf, look for a bright and sunny space. But avoid direct sunlight as it can burn the leaves. These trees are normally found in humid, warm and tropical places, so keep it in a spot with consistent temperatures… i.e. not next to your heater or in front of your air conditioner.

I’ve found the magic formula with watering my tree is one big cup a week. I normally take mine into the bathroom so the water can drain through into the shower over the day, as I keep it in a wooven basket (’cause it looks pretty sweet). If your fiddle leaf is in a pot too big to move, a general rule is to water it when the top inch of soil is dry. Test it by sticking you finger in the soil. The time between watering will change from season to season. With my last fiddle leaf, my love language was water. I loved it so much. So much it died. This was most disappointing (and an expensive mistake). Don’t deviate from the watering plan people.

Now being an indoor plant the leaves gather dust, and this can effect how they breathe. So once a month get a damp cloth and gently wipe them down. Or alternatively you can give you fiddle leaf a  lukewarm shower, yes just like us they don’t like cold water. I mean, who wouldn’t want their fiddle leaf to have glossy leaves?

Now if you want your fiddle leaf to grow nice and tall, there are a few things to help it along. First of all plant it in a bigger pot. Duh. But do this in spring. Also fertilise once a month during growing months- not winter. This is when the tree lays dormant in its growth.

Now it’s not the end of the world if some leaves fall off. That means you’re either over-watering or under-watering it. Just get your watering plan back in check before it’s too late.

Oh and here’s a hot tip. Bunnings is selling mini fiddle leaf figs for $25. Yep, what a steal. If you want a bigger one I suggest going to Flower Power where they are around $100. Happy plant shopping friends, and don’t over water! It will loose its leaves and die. And you will be sad.

Meet Adam, the new D.I.Y host for Better Homes and Gardens

BHAG---Adam-and-Demi-1

Adam won the hearts of the Australian public with his can do attitude and crazy contageous laugh on House Rules last year. Oh yeah, he and his fiancé Lisa totally won… meaning not only did they get their house fully renovated, but also got their mortgage paid off entirely!

Well the winning streak hasn’t ended there for Adam, who is now the new D.I.Y host on long running popular lifestyle program Better Homes and Gardens. Being a qualified carpenter operating a successful construction business, he has many tips and tricks to teach us around the house! He’s also being joined by Demi Harman, once a Home and Away babe who will be taking over craft and making it cool all over again.

I had a chance to to talk to Adam this week about his past whirlwind year, and adventures to come.

Hi Adam, thanks for being with us today!
No worries, thanks for having me!

What was your best and worst moments from house rules? (Obviously besides winning…)
The best would have to be walking into our house for the first time after it was renovated. Just to see the change and how much work went into it in just 7 days was amazing! Also when Lisa and I got the 3 perfect 10’s in Townsville. That was a really good feeling and I was so proud of Lisa for not giving up and seeing how quickly she learnt about design. The worst would have to be the both times we camped. First in Perth then in Townsville. The heat in both states was a killer and the insects in Townsville were the worst.  We got eaten alive. Not cool….

What was your favourite space that you and Lisa renovated?
Favourite space… there were a few but I think the kitchen in Townsville was good. We were very happy with how that came together after working through all the problems that we came across. Obstacles like the cyclone ties being where we wanted to put the widows. So there was a lot of planning issues, like moving cabinets to make sure we could get the oven in the center of the two windows. Also the design of the island bench. I would love that in my place!

Screen Shot 2015-01-22 at 5.38.10 pm

Have you kept in contact with any of the contestants?
Yeah I talk to Ryan and Lloyd. They’re good blokes.

What are you most excited about joining Better Homes and Gardens?
Being part of the team is amazing! And getting to work along side the other presenters will be great.

You must be excited to work with Joh again!
Absolutely pumped to work with Joh again, she is awesome. You know you’re going to have a laugh if Joh is around!

What can we expect to see you doing on the show this year?
D.I.Y projects like all those jobs around the house inside and out that people keep putting off. Hopefully I can show them it’s not that hard and give them the confidence to go do the job. Also hopefully give the people renovating some inspiration and ideas for there own projects.

Now you’ve relocated to Sydney, are you going to pick up the tools and to renovate again?
Lisa and I are hoping to find a house in Sydney that needs some TLC. We would love to renovate together again. We were going to do it in Melbourne but plans change!

What interior style do you gravitate towards?
I like the feel of modern open plan living but also love the rustic feel of industrial interiors.

What interior trends are you excited about this year?
Oh there is always something new coming out when it comes to interior design. Whether it be the new range of ceaser stone or just new fixtures and fittings that get used around the house. It’s always exciting to see.

Well I’m very excited to work with you this year, thanks for your time!
Thanks! I’m pumped for the year ahead and very excited to work with everyone involved in making BHG.

To catch Adam in person he’ll be at  West Gosford Bunnings on the 14th and 15th of February, come and get a Valentine’s Day kiss on the cheek!
